News 1999

31st December, 1999.
Y2K - Coincidence or not, my computer crashed pretty badly today and now everything looks different on my screens ! Weird.
Anyway I'm here for two things today. Firstly to wish everyone who's computers have not crashed, a Happy New Year / Millennium.
In particular this site wishes to thank two folks who have made the hard slog of these pages worth while :-
Jim Ross (click to see) and Christian Kelly who is responsible for the excellent
E-mail
Thanks to Mike Newton, who sent the following message ...
You probably have this info but there are two locally based players from the 70's.
Ron Harris, Chelsea runs a restaurant/country club just outside Warminster in Wiltshire. His son Mark played regularly for Warminster where his crisp tackling  and high energy made him a favourite with the crowd who with great originality nicknamed him "Chopper"!  Ron was often seen at the ground when his son played, in fact the first time I stood next to him I kept thinking "is it him?". It was.
Also on the subject of Warminster Town, Paul Newman, brother of ex-Norwich & Bristol City star Rob Newman played for the team. His influence was obvious when the Town turned out for an away match wearing an old Norwich away kit (complete with Premier League badges on the sleeves).
Geoff Butler, ex Norwich City & Sunderland manages Salisbury City and has done for years. He is very much a fixture at Salisbury and runs just about everything.
Colin Sullivan (Plymouth Argyle), ex-Norwich City. Last heard of about 4 years ago running a gardening and landscaping firm in the Southampton area.
Regards Mike Newton. (See Where are they now ? for January 2000)
No, I didn't know it, so thanks very much for that. Geoff Butler and Colin Sullivan have been added to their respective pages, Rob Newman doesn't qualify as such.

29th December, 1999.
News: Commentators Update.
'The Sunday Times' on Boxing Day ran an article with Graeme Souness (Tottenham Hotspur) which will be summarised on the Where are they now ? page. In it he refers to being a Sky pundit ...
Realisation (1) EntRay
Doing some random surfing I came across some excellent Walsall sites only to discover that their manager, Ray Graydon was a Bristol Rovers player in 1970-71 season. Ray has also been added to Rothmans. See http--www.saddlers.co.uk-managers-graydon.htm
Realisation (2) In - Hibbetts
One of the more obvious omissions this, but the late Terry Hibbett (Leeds United) had a brother Ken who has now been added to the Wolves squad players section. See Sons and Daughters - brothers.

24th December, 1999.
To celebrate Alan Ball, and Bobby Robson being frequent visitors to the News pages, there are now pictures of them available. For no particular reason, other than I liked the pictures, I've now added pages for David Best of Ipswich Town and the famous Leeds United pre-runner to Gordon Strachen, Bobby Collins, who was at Morton in the 1970-71 season. Just for good measure there is also now a picture of Newcastle United as Fairs Cup winners in July 1969.
News : 1 Become 2
David Beckham could only manage second spot in the Continentally biased European Footballer of the Year award, losing out to the £39 million rated Barcelona Brazilian, Rivaldo. But he's in good company from Bob's 70-71 players. The previous English runners up are :- 1957 Billy Wright ; !967 and 1968 Bobby Charlton (Manchester United) ; !970 Bobby Moore ; and 1977 Kevin Keegan.

18th December, 1999.
Once again there is a new addition to the Picture Points this Saturday.
Realisation (1) Peter Feature
The Picture Points feature highlighted that the Gillingham Manager and ex-Under 21 England manager, Peter Taylor is in fact entitled to a place on Bob's 70-71 pages, having played his first games for Southend during that season. This required a further addition to the Rothman's pages also. Belatedly, then, I'll announce that Peter was Division Two's Manager of the Month (see FTT - News Item)!!!
Realisations (2) & (3) Portsmouth's Balls
Following Alan Ball 's sacking at Portsmouth, his acolytes have been tumbling, too. Not least his son, Jimmy who was the assistant youth team coach. Jimmy has the family name following his late-grandfather James Alan Ball (Preston North End manager) and father Alan James Ball - Alan's full name. Jimmy's now been added to the Sons and Daughters page.
Related to this is that Alan's former coach, Ted MacDougall has also been sacked this week. Presuming this to be the former Norwich, Southampton and Manchester United player, and destroyer of personal (I used to spend my childhood summers in Broadstairs !) non-League favourites, Margate, in the 1971 F.A.Cup - when he scored 9 goals, I've now added him to the Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic list of players as well as to the Rothman's list. See The Official Portsmouth FC website.
Realisation (4) Famous Fergies
When the Ferguson headlines concentrated on Darren and not Alex last week I almost passed it by. Then I came to realise that the scorer of Wrexham's sensational 2-1 F.A.Cup 3rd round winner against higher League opposition, Middlesbrough, was actually none other than the son of football's grumpiest knight. This relationship has now been added to the Sons and Daughters page. See Middlesbrough (Home)
Realisation (5) Physio - Wrexham
And whilst researching for this I came upon the realisation that Wrexham are now fielding the 16 year old Shaun Pejic, who is the son of their physio, Mel. (See 16th December, 1999 Wrexham AFC and Web Page News and Notices ) This needn't have troubled the Bob 70-71 pages, but a look in and old edition of Barry Hugman's 'Football League Player's Records' reveals that Mel is indeed the brother of Mike, who was a 70-71 player and in the World of Soccer Stars album, no less, under Stoke City. Mel appears elsewhere on these pages as having the record League appearances for Hereford United. These relationships have been added to the Sons and Daughters page.
News (1) They Think His Managerial Career's Over ...
It was great to see Ron Atkinson (Oxford United) on Nick Hancock led comedy show, 'They Think It's All Over'. For the overseas readers the comedy's title derives from Ken Wolstenholme's 1966 World Cup Final commentary. As time approached the final seconds, England were 3-2 up and Ken began,'There's some people on the pitch ... they think it's all over', at which timely point Geoff Hurst (West Ham United) completes his hatrick, and Ken says, 'it is now'. I only mention all this because Ron is unusual for being a guest who was a professional League footballer at the time of the commentary, though being an Oxford United player, he was not exactly a contender for the team.
News (2) They Think His Contract's Over ...
Lawrie McMenemy (Doncaster Rovers manager) has decided to not renew his contract for Northern Ireland. The problem is replacing him. The promise is that this will be done before the New Year.

11th December, 1999.
Alan Ball's career breakdown has been added to Where are they now ? There is an addition to the Picture Points feature from today's 'The Times'. If you haven't seen it yet go to the Southampton page and visit Christian Kelly's excellent On the Cross site, thanks Christian for sending all the link updates which have now been added to the page. You MUST go to Mick Channon's page and hear the tribute if you have real audio.
News (1) Product Sirtification.
(a) Sir Alex Ferguson (Falkirk) is doing more than managing Manchester United these days. In an unfamiliar smiling mode he is seen carrying an implausible number of footballs behind the slogan, ' All Managers Have Them.' in the latest magazine advert for American Express.
(b) Sir Geoff Hurst (West Ham United) can also be heard in an advert for the charity organisation, the Lord Taverners which is presently being run on Talk Radio.
News (2) Commentators Update
As I write, I see that Rodney Marsh (Q.P.R.) is one of the experts receiving the scores into the Sky One newsdesk. According to Picture Points Pat Crerand (Manchester United) is a regular on Century Radio. See Where are they now - commentators.
Realisation : Alun Evans x 2
Whilst researching for the updated Liverpool page, I see that Alun Evans' father, Alun Evans Senior, was also a professional footballer playing 18 games in the 1947 first post-war season for West Brom. See Sons and Daughters - Sons and Fathers.

9th December, 1999.
The list of record league appearances started many moons ago, is now completed to show all 92 current clubs and a few more besides. It makes interesting reading ... to VERY boring people like me. November's News has now been achieved.
News (1) Alan Ball Sacked, Again ...
It's quite an achievement for Alan Ball to be sacked WITHOUT having relegated his team, though he was making a pretty good go of doing so. Alan's second spell as Portsmouth manager finally came to an end today at 10.30 a.m. which was reported as being on the cards (see 27th November, 1999) even before Saturday's 1-0 defeat to relegation placed Sheffield United that left Portsmouth just 20th in Division One. The temporary replacement is former Arsenal team-mate, Bob McNab.
See the announcement at The Official Portsmouth FC website. A review of Alan's time as Portsmouth manager can be found at The Official Portsmouth FC website and The Official Portsmouth FC website. Portsmouth's chairman, Milan Mandaric explains the reason for the sacking at The Official Portsmouth FC website.
News (2) George Graham - Dodgy Finances, Again ...
And talking of former Arsenal team-mates, 'The Sunday Times' reports that Tottenham Hotspur manager, George Graham still owns 32 shares for local rivals, Arsenal. Though they were worth only £8,500 when he acquired them as their manager, they are now worth £83,000. George has too much Scottish canny business sense to sell them, and he's not breaking any rules it seems. Managers are allowed to own 10 % of other clubs' shares. Arsenal showed less loyalty to him than he does to their shares it seems ...
News (3) Joe Kinnear(Spurs) Wants To Manage Top London Club, Again ...
Sticking with the North London rivals, Football 365 ran the following news item on Sunday on the former Spurs player ...
"KINNEAR FEARS FOR DONS Former Wimbledon boss Joe Kinnear believes his old club could end up in Division One if their Norwegian owners insist on selling off the best players. Kinnear, who left the club in the summer following a heart attack after giving the Dons 10 years' service under supremo Sam Hammam, spoke of his private fears today. Now fitter and healthier following his health scare in March, Kinnear is actively looking for a new challenge and would love to manage one of the big London clubs. But he is equally keen not to see his former club relegated from the top flight and believes Wimbledon's distant Norwegian master Kjell Inge Rokke is only interested in the business side of running a club.
Kinnear, who left Wimbledon in the summer to be replaced by Egil Olsen, said: ''The Norwegians are obviously not in love with football. They are business-orientated and whatever amount of money it is, they are looking to get their money back and the only way to get it back is to sell off the best players. ''That's going to do nothing because I spent eight hard years in the Premiership to build that club and build up great players and now I can see it all going up in smoke. If they sell the best players they are heading for Division One.''
Kinnear says he is ready for a big challenge again but admits he still talks to his old players and socialises with them. Asked if he would consider a return to Wimbledon if Hammam called him, Kinnear told BBC Radio 5 Live: ''It's a tough one to call. I don't believe you should ever go back but there's something special about that place.'' For now Kinnear is keeping an eye on the job market - but he wants a top club and an ambitious project. Kinnear, who played top-flight soccer for Tottenham and was capped 26 times by the Republic of Ireland, said: ''The perfect job? Obviously I would like to stay in London and manage one of the big clubs. I might have hit the post a few times. There's a couple of big clubs up in Scotland - one I've been associated with for many, many years - and I was always on the short-list for the Celtic job for many, many years, but that didn't materialise. ''I was on the short-list at Tottenham for many years but that didn't materialise. One never knows in this game, but should the possibility of a decent London club become available I'd certainly grab the opportunity.'' "
E-mail Thanks to Peter Gable for the e-mails earlier this week. Peter has only gone and lost his signed Terry Cooper sock tab from the early Seventies ! What a nightmare ! In a small way of making amends, the Terry Cooper page is now up and running.
Realisations A new feature this, in rather dubious green for those of you that can read the pages' different colours. Now that I've expanded Bob's 70-71 pages to include anyone from the 70-71 season, and not just the World of Soccer Stars book, I'm inevitably going to come across new players and managers as they are pointed out to me from e-mails, and moments of insight ! Naturally, I can't back date news stories, and rather than usher in new arrivals in through the back door as I have done up to now, I've decided to embrace them with full honours in an effort to encourage anyone to tell me about anyone they know about - maybe even a relative, friend, or the person himself ( women's football will have to get it's own website for the 70-71 season ...!)
Realisation (1) One such moment of insight has led me towards one of football's greatest names hidden amongst Bob's 70-71 players - a person knighted because of football no less, and that's a very rare achievement in itself.. This player was Falkirk's leading goalscorer of the 1970-71 season, yet surprisingly, it is not for this that he has been knighted - I can't think why not, but maybe being arguably the greatest Premiership manager to date and possibly the World's greatest manager of the Nineties has taken precedence. It is, of course, Sir Alex Ferguson (Falkirk). See Alex Ferguson Manchester United Manager Profile-Pictures
Realisation (2) Whilst researching for the Terry Cooper page, I was able to confirm that he has a son who played League football - usually (as is so often the case) for one of the teams for which his father was manager ! We all know Colin Cooper from his Nottingham Forest days as well as his big return to Middlesbrough. Well it's not him, it's Mark Cooper, who has now left League football (- due to a broken leg at the height of his career !??) (See Sons and Daughters).

30th November, 1999.
News Sugar and S-Pulse
Steve Perryman's (Spurs) team Shimizu S-Pulse have apparently beaten Yokohama F Marinos 2-1 to get through to the second stage of the J-League in Japan this week. The victory was secured in front of 44,000 supporters at the Yokohama Stadium which will stage the next World Cup Final.
In the article, 'Perryman looking forward in anger' by Rob Hughes in Monday's, 'The Times' newspaper. he is pictured with his team and very jolly he looks too. The article reveals that Steve is very angry towards the manner of his and Ossie Ardiles' sacking by Alan Sugar whom he sees as not having any true football knowledge. Steve believed Alan undermined the manager and got rid of loyal club members in a 'cruel' way.
Steve has children aged 3 and 4, and wants to educate them in England. So it seems he would be interested in a job back here.

27th November, 1999
A useful source of answers to the question, 'where are they now ?', has been Richard Whitehead's, 'Picture Points' in the sports section of the Saturday (London) edition of, 'The Times'. See the relevant players which are now being summarised for Bob's 70-71 pages at Picture Points.
News (1) Lots of Speculation ...
(a) Brian Kidd (Manchester United)
May be joining Manchester City as coach. This is the club which he helped to Championship runners-up in 1976-77 as a player. If he goes he'll join a more Bob 70-71 favourites, Joe Royle (Everton), Asa Hartford (WBA), Willie Donachie (Manchester City squad) and Dennis Tueart (Sunderland squad) !
(b) Alan Ball
According to 'The Sun', Alan's days as Portsmouth's manager may be limited.
(c) Terry Venables (QPR)
Is apparently wanted as coach for Aston Villa along with David Platt.
News (2) Commentators Update
ITV's coverage of Chelsea's 3-1 home victory over Feyenoord in the Champions Cup had Terry Venables (QPR) in the studio and David Pleat (Peterborough United) offering expert analysis. And whilst on the subject of Terry Venables, it seems the ex-England coach has his own radio show on Saturdays at noon on Virgin Radio, where he chats football to callers, whilst Russ Williams plays the records. See Where are They Now ?

25th November, 1999
There's a load more details of the Ipswich Town team, and this introduces the idea of having a player by player 'where are they now ? guide. This has been lately possible due to the , 'Where Are They Now ?' book by Andy Pringle and Neil Fissler.

22nd November, 1999
In honour of the Scottish victory within defeat, there is now the first picture of one of the Celtic players, Jimmy Johnstone. Unfortunately - I'm sadly lacking in Scottish League information ...
News (1) Politician Talks Stools
This story was reported by the Football 365 media watch : "An unusual source, perhaps, but Private Eye has an amusing little story about Kate Hoey, the Sports Minister who sometimes gets in a pickle over whether she is a die-hard fan of Manchester United or Arsenal. Hoey has claimed to be mad for all things Highbury, but "in a 1994 interview she said she retained her childhood support for Manchester United, sparked by having watched George Best play for Northern Ireland. As a wee girl she had to stand on a stool to be able to see her hero," is the information relayed by Private Eye. All very sweet, but "Best's first appearance in Belfast was on 29 April 1964, against Uruguay." Kate Hoey was 18 in 1964. We can only imagine how strange she must have looked standing on a stool with all the other little kiddies. Politicians, eh? "
News (2) Commentators Update.
My North East correspondent, Colin Pharoah, tells me that Bobby Moncur (Newcastle United) is a regular evening presenter on Century - along with a Middlesbrough player, who's name escapes him ! See Where are they now ?
News (3) Judges 70-71
Harry Kewell the Leeds United Australian player, has been named Cisco Systems Young Player of the Month, which I mention for two reasons. 1) I'm a Leeds United fan, and 2) the three of the four judges are from Bob's 70-71 pages, namely, Kevin Keegan , Bobby Robson, and Lawrie McMenemy (Doncaster Rovers manager).

20th November, 1999
Possibly against my better judgement, there is now a page for Kevin Keegan, who was a Scunthorpe player back in 70-71. For no reason other than I love the picture - which sums up the 1970's sportsman - there is now a page for the prolific Hull City goalscorer, Ken Wagstaff.
The site has also picked up a fabulous link from Michael Ashford's superb Footie 51 site. See the link at Nostalgia and explore the rest of the site from there, it is well, well worth it, it's entertained me for an hour or two already. In celebration of this, I have added a Dave Mackay page.
News (1) England 0 Scotland 1
What a damp squib of a qualification for England ! Much to Jim Ross 's delight Scotland won and pi... er, rained on England's bonfire as they scraped in to Euro 2000. Jamie Reknapp was playing again, but was still being played out of position, so again failed to make a tremendous impact. For a match summary see Football365
For a general summary of the latest 'Battle of Britain' see Football Unlimited Euro 2000 Euro 2000. For a run through of how England qualified for the finals see Football365.
See how former England manager Bobby Robson (Ipswich Town manager) rated Kev's performance at Football365.
Kevin himself reckons England can go all the way and win the competition (see Football365). Yes, Kevin.
News (2) Toshack sacked
As anticipated, Kevin Keegan's old striking partner, John Toshack (Cardiff City squad) was sacked as manager of Real Madrid last week. See 19-11-99 - Toshack Article (The Independent)
News (3) 'Arry
Thanks to birthday money I finally acquired the paperback version (I missed the 'ardback) of Harry Redknapp's autobiography, " 'Arry" ghost written with Derek McGovern. I could 'ardly put it down. 'Arry tells 'is story with childlike enthusiasm, drawing you in with tales of West 'Am in the Sixties, American soccer, and breaking through into management with Bournemouth. That was all rather fun, but the end chapters dart around mopping up all the loose hends, erm, ends which would be of more interest to the tabloid fanatic and West 'Am fan. 'Arry's insights into Bobby Moore's life were infinitely more interesting than tales of gambling wins and loses. Only his fatherly worship of his son Jamie made the end chapters worth pursuing. 'Urry up and buy it for 'oliday reading this C'ristmas. It's r.r.p. is £6-99 and its printed by Collins Willow.

15th November, 1999
Pele's 1,000th goal page is fully up and running - see News (5) yesterday. As are full Third Division and Fourth Division pages following on from 12th November update below.
News (2) Tip of the Day - Part 2
Further to the news item on 12th November, Roy Evans (Liverpool squad, see Roy Time I was back in the game (Anfield Online)) and Graeme Souness (Spurs squad) have also declared their interest in the Blackburn job.
14th November, 1999
News (1) Scotland 0 England 2
All of footballing interest in Britain has ground to a halt to cover the match and an unbelievable amount of guff is being written about it. What Kevin Keegan has to say about the victory can be seen at the end of the match report at Football365. Earlier insights into Kev's preparations could be found at Soccernet.
News (2) Recounting Legends
Amongst the more interesting guff have been various legends recalling old England v Scotland games, including Alan Ball at Soccernet, Gerry Francis (Q.P.R. squad) at Soccernet, Mick Channon at Football365, Jim McCalliog (Wolves) at Soccernet, and Geoff Hurst at Soccernet.
News (3) Legendary Lunch.
At a lunch sponsored by Carling, former legends of England and Scotland met to decide on an all time England versus Scotland match. The England legends were Jimmy Armfield , Terry Venables (Q.P.R.), Mick Channon, Terry Butcher and Norman Hunter (Leeds United). Whilst the Scottish legends were Graeme Souness (Spurs squad), Archie Gemmill (Preston N.E.), Andy Gray, Asa Hartford (West Brom)and Frank McLintock (Arsenal).
Their choices were :
England: Gordon Banks ; Jimmy Armfield, Duncan Edwards, Bobby Moore, Ray Wilson (Bradford City); Sir Stanley Matthews, Sir Bobby Charlton (Manchester United), Bryan Robson, Sir Tom Finney; Gary Lineker, Jimmy Greaves . Coach: Sir Alf Ramsey (England manager).
Scotland: Andy Goram; Danny McGrain (Celtic squad), Alan Hansen, Dave Mackay , Eric Caldow; Jimmy Johnstone , Billy Bremner, Graeme Souness (Spurs squad), Jim Baxter; Kenny Dalglish (Celtic squad), Denis Law . Coach: Willie Ormond.
For the full story see Soccernet.
News (5) Millennial Milestone.
'The Independent on Sunday' reminds us that 19th November is the 30th anniversary of Pele's 1,000th goal ! Click to see Tim Vickery report of the goal. Pele went on to score 281 more.

12th November, 1999
Due to popular demand (I think I may have got a letter once several months ago ...) Bob's 70-71 pages is about to undergo a broadening of criteria, which can already be seen in effect on the Second Division Gallery pages under Cardiff and Q.P.R. I've always had squad players for the first division teams - well ultimately this will now extend across all the divisions. Sadly this will now include Kevin Keegan who was a Scunthorpe player in this season ... Never mind.
It's impossible for me to backdate the news pages, but it will mean players will start to be covered, who may not have been covered on the news pages before. The emphasis, however, will certainly remain on the players in the Soccer Stars book and their offspring !
News (1) Manager of the Month
At last ! Good news on the management front from a player from Bob's 70-71 pages !! Joe Royle (Everton) has been named October's Manager of the Month for Division One after taking Manchester City to the top of the Division with a six point lead.
News (2) Hit of the Week
'The Express' last week reported that the police were not providing extra protection to Joe Royle's old team mate, Alan Ball when his Portsmouth side travel to Manchester City. It seems Alan is receiving death threats from 'supporters' of the club he successfully relegated.
News (3) Tip of the Day
According to yesterday's 'Independant' Newspaper, Bertie Vogts (Star Players of Mexico 70) is the hottest tip to replace Brian Kidd (Manchester United) as Blackburn Rovers manager (See 5th November below). Jack Walker must be a Bob 70-71 pages fan, because the other candidates are Joe Kinnear and Colin Todd (Sunderland)

11th November, 1999
At last, here it is the "infamous" Jim Ross and George Best photo ... Click Jim's name to see our U.S. Correspondent in the days when his hair was longer than George's.

10th November, 1999
News (1): These Charming Men
What do Harry Redkapp and Morrissey, the chief misery of the pop music world, have in common ? Answer - very large pictures of Bobby Moore on the wall. As noted on August 1999 Where are they now ?, Harry has a the famous Bobby Moore picture with Pele on his wall at work (see picture). Well as seen in ,'the times magazine ' for 6 November, 1999,on page 35, Morrissey has a very large sixties photo of Bobby Moore on his wall at his home in Los Angeles !
News (2) : Big Mouth Strikes Again
The December, 1999 edition of Match of the Day Magazine, 'MOTD' has four points of interest for Bob's 70-71 pages. The '10 Minutes ' feature is with Ron Atkinson (Oxford United), Jimmy Hill's Chinwag is with Bobby Robson , Trevor Brooking (West Ham United squad) has a regular, 'Dear Trevor ...' letters page, and there is a four page interview by Pat Murphy with Brian Clough (Derby County manager) entitled, 'Big Mouth Strikes Again'. Clough has now been booze free for a year and is still ready to give his opinion on football controversies. There the interest ends, however, beyond seeing that the above mentioned are alive and well, the articles are hardly 'must see's.

7th November, 1999
Added a picture only of Trevor Hockey, in his pre-bearded days.
6th November, 1999
There's a new picture of Billy Bremner scrapping with Manchester United on Willie Morgan's page, thus uniting two of this site's favourites. October is archived. And pages have been added for Johnny Giles and George Graham.
5th November, 1999
News Brian Bye Bye
As predicted on 31st October News, Blackburn Rovers have sacked Brian Kidd (Manchester United). Jack Walker said: "It's a sad day for me particularly and everyone connected with the club. Brian is a first class, honest man and so we wanted it to work out for him. But at the end of the day, I have to put the club first. results have not been good enough, in the end it's as simple as that." I would hardly weep for Brian, tough if the reports of £1 million compensation are true. See News Articles
Most newspaper reports concentrated on the £30,650,000 Brian had spent on 13 players in just 11 months to send his team plummeting like a stone to 19th in Division One. Some reported how Brian's old boss Sir Alex Ferguson slags Brian off in his book, saying he couldn't assess players, wouldn't make a manager, and talked behind his back. Miaow.

31st October, 1999
News (1) Bye Bye Brian
Brian Kidd's (Manchester United) days as Blackburn Rovers manager must surely be numbered. Blackburn are struggling in Division One after their relegation from the Premiership last season. But to make matters worse Blackburn's chairman Jack Walker is reported in the 'The Mirror' as saying "We are fine. As far as I am concerned, we don't have a problem. And yes, I still have every confidence in the manager. Why shouldn't I?" A certain kiss of death ... and that was before yesterday's 2-0 home defeat.
News (2) Best is Best.
George Best headed a pole by Duckham Fansview, a national opinion panel of 800 Britains, to find the best player in the British game. With 26% of the vote, he led considerably from the 10% polled by runners up, Bobby Charlton (Manchester United) and Kenny Dalglish (Celtic squad). The rest of the top ten were :- Bobby Moore, Stanley Matthews, Jimmy Greaves (West Ham United), Denis Law (Manchester United squad), Tom Finney, John Charles and Eric Cantona. That's four 70-71 Soccer Star album players and another two from the teams squads at that time.
News (3) Sir Bobby.
Sir Bobby Charlton was in the news twice last week. Once showing the five man 2006 FIFA World Cup delegation round Old Trafford, to boost England's World Cup bid (see Football365). Then offering FA Cup sponsers AXA hope by attempting to influence Manchester United into re-joining this year's competition which they have ducked out of so that they can take part in a competition in Brazil (- the reason being that it is believed that their participation will boost England's World Cup bid.)(See Manchester United Official Web site - News - Latest Feature).
Well Manchester United didn't re-join the competition (see Manchester United Official Web site - News - Latest Feature), - so much for Sir Bobby's influence on things, then ...
News (4) Steve Perryman.
According to 'The Express' last week Steve Perryman is the manager of the Japanese team Shimizu S-Pulse. Perryman (Tottenham Hotspur) talked of needing a break from English football and it seems that his team is about to win the title.
News (5) Back Home
Yesterday's 'The Times' article by Oliver Holt in the Sports section covered Bobby Robson (Ipswich Town manager). See 'Where are they now ?'

30th October, 1999
On 7th August, 1999 Leeds United unveiled a statue of Billy Bremner at Elland Road - later that month I visited it and here are some of the photos of Billy's Statue from then, taken by my Mum ! The jpg system loses a lot of the quality of the pictures, but you'll get the idea.

29th October, 1999
News (1) Best, George Best ... 007 Pints
November 1999's edition of 'Four, Four, Two', no.63, reports that George Best is to have a film made about him called ... well , 'Best'. It seems that former Manchester United player and current Macclesfield manager, Sammy MclLroy's daughter, Faye is to star in it as one of Best's girlfriends.
News (2) George Best - the Album
I've never had cause to mention this album before, but, 'Four, Four, Two' (as above, p.93) also has an article on references to football on records NOT by footballers. Included is the rather excellent, ' George Best', by Leeds United fans, the Wedding Present. The album's cover is essentially a picture of George in his Man United days. In the U.K. it was the band's first of eight albums to chart, entering on the 24th October, 1987 and exiting the following week having peaked at no.47 !!
News (3) Gaffer Gadgers
The magazine also lists the 20 Premiership managers in order of their age. Our 3 survivors appear in in the top seven ...

News (4) Seventies Shaggers
But the magazine's bumper fest of 70-71 footballers comes in the article, 'The footballer who shagged me', which is billed as, 'Tales from the 70s. When bad really meant bad'. Covering pages 50 to 55 and filled with 70s photos of footballers and their gals, George Best, Stan Bowles (Manchester City), Alan Hudson (Chelsea), Peter Storey (Arsenal), Frank Worthington, Charlie George, and Johnny Giles all have aspects of their bad boy reputation reported on. Sadly, time prevents me from expanding on this so get the magazine if you can.
News (5) Boring Book
'What's the story ? Boring Glory' by Mark Jacob Queen Anne Press (£8-99) features (boringly) the Premiership's sixth oldest manager, George Graham (of boring, boring Arsenal) on the cover and is apparently the story about his appointment as Spurs manager. A future feature will be books about / by the 70-71 stars.
News (6) Ron2Ron
Yesterday, Ron Atkinson (Oxford United) was added to the commentators list (see below), today's news is that Ron is the face of One2One's GoalLine service, which shows him smiling with a non too mobile looking 8 foot GoalLine phone.

News (1) Clough's Bust
On my travels on the M1 this week I came across, 'Forest Fever' a monthly 'Nottingham Evening Post' magazine. My copy is Volume III, No.3, 12 October, 1999. In it I came across the news that will be old hat for Nottm Forest fans that on 19th September, 1999, Brian Clough (Derby County manager), now 64, turned up to the Wolves match for his first visit in six years.
The reason was to commemorate the naming of , 'The Brian Clough Stand' after the manager who brought the club their only Championship in 1977-78, their only European silverware - the European Cup itself in 1979 and 1980, as well as their only League Cup wins in 1978, 1979, 1989, and 1991 ... not to mention the Anglo Scottish Cup, Simod Cup, and Zenith Data Systems Cup wins ... during his spell which lasted from 1975 to 1993. The F.A.Cup eluded him, though Forest were beaten finalists in 1991.
Cloughie also unveiled a bronze bust which is in place at the club's reception area.
He said, 'I'm delighted to be here again. I was a little bit envious of David Platt's tan - but he'll soon get rid of that on the training ground."
News (2) Foresters
'Forest Fever' (see News (1) ) also showed three 70-71 players on the backroom books. Liam O'Kane (Nottingham Forest) is coach (which I'd missed in the Rothman's 1999-2000 list), Ian Storey-Moore (Nottingham Forest) is Chief Scout, and Larry Lloyd (Liverpool) is Public Relations Officer.
News (3) Dining to Meet You
'Forest Fever' (see News (1) ) also offers a chance to see some 70-71 'legends', at a £35-00 a time with a meal, sorry Executive Dinner, thrown in. They've already had Pat Crerand (Manchester United), but still have Ron Yeats (Liverpool) on 2nd December, Alan Ball on February 24, and Frank Worthington on April 6th.
News(4) Commentators.
Further to the ever growing list, Ron Atkinson (Oxford United) added the expert comments for I.T.V.'s coverage of Arsenal's ill fated 1-0 defeat in the European Championship yesterday. Bob Wilson (Arsenal) was also announced as commentator for a future match. See Where are they now ?

23rd October, 1999
Added pages for Gerd Müller (see e-mail below), Rodney Marsh, Eddie Gray and Gordon West.
E-Mail
Hi Bob, Cheers for the Bobby Clark photo. It was a great laugh, BUT I have a request. How about putting in that wonderful photo from the 1970 World Cup of the Super England 'keeper Peter Bonetti getting HAMMERED by that Great Striker Gerd Müller knocking England OUT of the cup ENDING England's world championship. I am joking Bob, but it would be funny.
Jim Ross
...Hmmm, would it ??? In the interest of balance, and ever happy to oblige with requests ... whatever the motive !! ... see Gerd Müller
Bobby Gould
Now no longer the Wales manager, that gives our Bobby (Wolves) a chance to add comments in the studio for Saturday's football coverage on Talk Radio. Which adds to the ever growing list of 70-71 players in the commentators list, see Where are they now ?

News (1)WORLD EXCLUSIVE !
Given that the match only finished 18 minutes ago (as I write) I'm presuming this to be a World Wide first match report on Leeds United All Stars versus John Hendrie's Sky Sports at Guiseley Football Club raising money for St. Mary's School Menston Sports College Status Bid. It was 2-0 to Leeds which very much reflected the run of play after a dodgy Leeds start. Both goals came in the second half which made up for the disappearance of former Leeds United and Scotland All Time Great and current Leeds assistant manager, Eddie Gray. Eddie ran his socks off and still has that same distinctive dribble with a style all of his own, and was the first player who looked like scoring when an early shot skimmed in front of Sky Sport's goal.
As far as I could tell Peter Lorimer and Terry Yorath (Leeds United squad), who had been promised in the posters and programme were absent, but a Peter lookalike - Simon Lorimer, presumably a close relative, did huff and puff his way around in the first half.. Former Leeds United and Northern Ireland international, John McClelland made a distinctive figure in the match, and was one of two Leeds players wearing a no.17 shirt ! Former Leeds United player and coach, the silver haired, Jimmy Lumsden (Leeds United squad) was the Leeds team captain and kept pace with some skill for much of the game. Former Leeds united player and Guiseley manager, Bobby Davison had a good game too and set up the second goal.
Eddie signed a few autograph books before leaving, and I asked him for a quick photo literally seconds before leaving the ground as the score stood at 1-0. ' Of course' he said and stood still long enough for me to miss one picture because the lens was shut, then take one successfully. It's not a digital camera I'm afraid so if the picture came out at all, it'll appear here just as soon as I finish the film and develop it ! (I bet top sports photographers don't have these problems !!!)
The pictures have now come back. Click World Exclusive to see the pictures.
News (2) Next Generation Update
Ian Lawson : The car park attendant of the above game was telling me he was 67 years old and has been a Blackpool fan since he was 12 - hence he would have seen better days than their 5-0 home defeat to Bury yesterday ... little would he have he realised my loyalties to Ian Lawson who scored the 4th of the 5 goals.

16th October, 1999
Well, it's a great day in Internet history. As a unique collaboration between this site's Southampton page and Christian Kelly's excellent On The Cross site means that nowhere on the web is Southampton's 1970-71 season so well covered !! Christian's site provides superb information on every player in the Southampton squad that season - so the pressure's off me to do the same ... !
Where are they now ? Click to see the latest on Willie Morgan.
News (1) Back-off Beckham Back-up
Former Manchester United manager from the 1970-71 season, Wilf McGuiness, made the news this week by offering support to poor, helpless, picked-on ... David Beckham (thinks not). Wilf believes Posh's partner is being unfairly singled out for football fines for ... well for being David Beckham. And ... ?. See Football365. Sympathizers try Planet Beckham.
News (2) Temper Temper.
Star of Mexico 1970, Pele, advises David Beckham to temper his temper to become a great player. Pele's in Dubai to film a Mastercard advert it seems and says it's a good time for Becks because he's not yet well enough known to be marked out of the game. Pele also said that the English Premier League is currently the best in the World !! See Football365.
News (3) Racist Nonsense
Harry Redknapp (West Ham United) has made the news for denying the claim by former West Ham Israelie international Eyal Berkovic that the West Ham set up is racist and run like a pub team. The Celtic player made the claim in his new autobiography and Harry's said he'll let his team do the talking on the pitch this Sunday morning if he can get enough players together for the game. See Football365 and West Ham United FC - The Official Web Site.
News (4) Give Us A Break ...
Our millionaire footballers are being overstretched according to Harry's son Jamie Redknapp. 'Physical demands are becoming increasingly excessive' says the poor little rich boy who's probably never done a real day's work in his life (sorry did I give away my opinion there). Jamie wants a Winter break it seems - yes, it must be tough playing football for a living, Jamie. See Football365.

News (1)'Vintage Claret'
Page 14 of today's 'Sunday Independent' sports section has a fabulous 8 column article on Arthur Bellamy, the former Burnley player, who is now Burnley's groundsman. See 'Where are they now ?' for further coverage.
News (2) 'Straight-talking' Harry
... And on page 18, 'The Interview' is with Harry Redknapp (West Ham United), which makes good reading. Once again see 'Where are they now ?' for further coverage.
News (3) Next Generation Update.
Well, all I've spotted from yesterday's matches is Tony's nephew, Darren Currie, got sent off for Barnet in their 1-0 victory against Rochdale.
But today ... as I write, in fact ... England are beating Belgium 2-1 and Jamie Redknapp scored the second goal - his first for England. Frank Lampard Junior is equipping himself well in his full team debut, too. For Jamie's goal see Football365 and for Frank's debut see West Ham United FC - The Official Web Site. (See Sons and Daughters).
8th October, 1999
Pushing on with putting faces to names in Jim Ross's e-mails (5th September and 6th October, 1999), there's now a picture and career figures page for Clyde Best.
September's News is now archived.
News : Leeds Leeds Leeds
Official Leeds United magazine, 'Leeds,Leeds,Leeds' is far more interested in the club's history than it's contemporaries in the genre, and the October 1999 issue14 is brimming with interest for Bob's1970-71 pages including :-
'Painter Man', Yorkshire painter Darren Baker,23, does paintings of Leeds heroes, and the article shows some great paintings of Billy Bremner and Mick Jones (Leeds United).
'All Time Hates' a team of 11 players who have caused Leeds grief over the years. I hope to present the players later, but 8 of the 11 villains are 70-71 players ( ... and mostly Chelsea ones!)
'England expects' Yorkshire born, reformed Scouser/Geordie , Kevin Keegan talks about things including his footballing relationship with former England and Leeds manager, Don Revie (Leeds United manager).
'Five of the Best' : former Leeds and Bradford City star, John Hendrie, describes his 5 best players and they include, Billy Bremner, Denis Law (Manchester United squad), and Eddie Gray (Leeds United).
But the cherry on the cake is 'Nine-ty Miles An Hou-r', which is an interview with Peter Lorimer, which I will summarise on the 'Where Are They Now ?' page.
... and I wasn't even looking that hard.
Come on Leeds we're top of the table, this amount of retrospection can't be healthy (- and this from a retrospective web site !!!)

7th October, 1999.
A few new pictures have been added today. First off there's a great new picture of Arthur Mann. Arthur is the father of Hull City's Neil Mann and died in February of this year. He's seen here with England and Manchester City goalie, Joe Corrigan.
I've also added a picture of England goalkeeping hero, Gordon Banks.
And fitting the goalkeeper theme, I couldn't resist adding a picture of top Scottish goalie from the era, Bobby Clark, whom Jim Ross mentions in the e-mail of the 6th October, 1999.This page includes details of the England v Scotland game at the end of the 1970-71 season, which I hope to expand to include the whole home championship.
6th October, 1999.
Hopefully, all being well, and relying on me actually knowing what I'm doing (!!) there should soon be a collaboration with Christian Kelly's Southampton site which will doubtless make the stop-press pages of 'Computeractive', and which will aim to give fabulous coverage of all the one time Southampton players dotted around the site, as well as Southhampton's 1970-71 season.
E-mail
A quick addition to your Bobby Moore tribute. I was at a friendly between West Ham Utd. and a Mexican league team called Necaxa in the early 70's in Los Angeles. When Bobby Moore came on the pitch ALL the Necaxa players took turns having the team trainer take their photos with Bobby. Not one player went near any other West Ham player including Geoff Hurst (West Ham)!! That was the respect Bobby Moore received from fellow PLAYERS world wide. I also remember how out of place Bobby looked in his red, white and blue stars and stripes San Antonio Thunder jersey. I felt sorry for him.
Oh, did you know that Bobby Clark ex-Aberdeen and Scotland "keeper is the head soccer at Stanford University in Palo Alto,Calif. ? This is a big time famous university here in the states.
Jim Ross
Thanks Jim. Bobby Clark, for me, personified Scottish goalkeepers of the early Seventies - but anyone who knows about Scottish goalkeepers of the early Seventies would probably say, 'hold on Bob, he wasn't that bad ...' Anyway, who am I to knock a fellow Bob ? Bobby played 17 times for Scotland and was capped in the 70-71 season.
News.(1) Next Generation Update.
'The Sunday Independent' reported two more goals last Saturday for Bury man, Ian Lawson in their 3-2 home defeat of Cardiff, other sources say it's just one - but that's not bad ! See Dr P's Diary 2000 .
And only by seeing Sam Shilton's name on the score sheet for Hatlepool in thier 2-0 home defeat of rivals Dalington did I realise that he's signed a two month loan deal for them, whilst still being on Coventry's books. See Untitled Document.
Finally, it seems that with all the injuries to England squad, Frank Lampard, junior is on the brink of an England call up. Well done Frank !! See Soccernet.
(See Sons and Daughters).
News (2) Cloughie
Brian Clough (Derby County Manager) is in the news talking about Leicester City's Martin O'Neill being a good manager. See Soccernet. Brian's advice to O'Neill is commented on by former Sheffield Wednesday boss, David Pleat, Soccernet.
News (3) Ninety-miles-an-hour !
Peter Lorimer meanwhile is offering his views on the current Leeds United team. See Soccernet.
News (4) Ugly Big-Headed Footballers.
Now I'm not one to promote products, but I see that Corinthian - the manufacturers of those overly expensive, ugly, big-headed sportsmen (I wouldn't do well in advertising, would I ?) - have brought out a rather fabulous (I'll concede that one) set of the 1966 England World Cup winning side, including all 11 players plus the unluckiest non-team member, Jimmy Greaves (West Ham) and a Jules Rimet World Cup holding Bobby Moore. See Corinthian Marketing Web Site . I'll investigate other 70-71 players at a later date. Meanwhile, perhaps you would like to go to the Corinthian convention on the 31st October, it has a guest appearance from none other than Gordon Banks himself !! See Corinthian Messages
2nd October, 1999.
First new feature for a while is the addition of a Bobby Moore page.

News Todd Sacked
Yet another sacking of the 70-71 players to report I'm afraid. Earlier this week, Colin Todd (Sunderland) left his son behind at Bolton, following a poor start to the season.

20th September, 1999
News Robson's Great Eight Starter.
At the risk of over doing the Bobby Robson (Ipswich manager) story. I had to include one more news item, to cover Robson's first home game in charge at Newcastle United. After a mid-week European victory, Robson has gone eight better with an 8-0 win against the only team below them in the Premiership, Sheffield Wednesday. And the papers are full of written-off England captain, Alan Shearer, scoring five of them.

19th September, 1999
Well, I've added a page all for Willie Morgan.

18th September, 1999
Personal hero, Terry Paine (Southampton) has now got his own page, and I've started a listing of English Club League Appearance Record, which relates to Terry's page.

17th September, 1999
Finally decided to start an archive today - rather than edit the news page. I'll probably do it every two months starting with July / August 1999. The archive can be found at the bottom of this page so that all the site's links can be kept in tact. See News.
There's also an addition to 'Where are they now ?' page concerning the Southampton 1976 cup winning team.
News (1) Commentators part 3
Leeds United's marvellous 3-1 win over Partizan Belgrade in the UEFA Cup this week (see Leeds United FC - The Official Web Site) was made all the better for hearing the Radio Leeds commentary, who's expert analysis was by Peter Lorimer. Lorimer was scorer in both legs in Leeds victory over Partizan in round 2 of the same competition - then called the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup - in 1967-68. That year Leeds ominously won the cup, their first trophy in Europe. At half time Peter recalled that Partizan dabbled in a bit of gamesmanship by insisting in playing in an all white strip which Leeds had by now made their own. The tactics didn't work, Leeds changed strips and won the match.
Whilst listening to the football on the remarkably Leeds biased Radio Leeds, I was watching it on the telly. There Trevor Brooking (West Ham United squad) was doing the analysis. Why ? There's not exactly a shortage on ex-Leeds players, why choose a non-connected Londoner ? Sloppy stuff from the BBC 'Match of the Day Team. At least I had alternative commentary. Trevor has also been heard commentating on Radio Five Live, so he's obviously got a good agent, at the moment.
News (2) Fired Burns
I hope Tommy Burns sacking at Reading wasn't too directly brought on by his players scoring own goals lately. See below at Next Generation News 12 th September !! (For news of sacking see Hob Nob Anyone - The Reading Football Club (Reading FC) Fanzine - DYNAMIC NEWS)

News (1) Batty Hunter
Today in 'The Times' Sports section, Russell Kempson reports, "Batty bounces back to win Hunter's plaudits."
' When Norman Hunter (Leeds United) made a tackle, his opponent stayed tackled. "Norman Bites Yer Legs", the Leeds United banners used to proclaim, and though it was never recorded that he sank molar into calf, the message was clear. He was hard.
David Batty is the modern day Hunter - Yorkshire born and bred, tough and cussed in the extreme. Close quarters combat is his game. He takes no prisoners, takes his punishment and gets ready for the next contest. Batty by name, often Batty by nature (eh ? no he isn't- Bob); he is hard (hard, yes he is hard - Bob).
Every team needs an enforcer and they tend to stick together, form a mutual admiration society. Hunter, now working in the media, watched at Highfield Road on Saturday as Batty propelled Leeds to an enthralling victory against City by the odd goal in seven. Age might have mellowed the old warrior, but his verdict on Batty was spot on.
"I would always pick David in any team of mine, " Hunter said. "Sure, he gets involved in a few flare-ups, but anyone who is any good has to have that little bit of spark in him. Getting sent off doesn't affect him; he just gets on with it, he's that type of lad." '
News (2) Dave Merrington
I'm a Leeds fan and yet I'd forgotten that Dave Merrington (Burnley) was still at the club as the youth team coach ... well actually he isn't now. He's left to go back Southampton way. See Leeds United FMC - The Official Web Site. I actually found out from a Southampton discussion site at Southampton Football Club Forum

12th September, 1999
The past weeks has seen the addition of a search, a guestbook and quizlet to the main index page (See Bob and 1970-71 footballers), as well as the development of the Coventry City page and further relations added to the Sons and Daughters page. By the time you read this I hope to have added an Allan Clarke and Gary Sprake pages.
News (1) Match of the Day
Yesterday's MOTD interviewed Harry Redknapp (West Ham United ) , but then it always does, Frank Lampard (also West Ham United) had a close up, and Jamie Redknapp (Liverpool) was, of course featured in the Liverpool game ... all this we know ...
But how brilliant to see a two second rather distant shot of Peter Osgood (Chelsea) who was apparently the match day host at the Chelsea match.
And the Chelsea v Newcastle United match was featured because it was Bobby Robson's (Ipswich Town manager) first game back as manager of an English football team for 16 years. His Newcastle team lost 1-0, but it was good to see that both sets of fans cheered the former England manager's return. See Newcastle United FC -org The Official Web Site for a full match report. It was also good to see a 1970-71 manager get a five minute interview with MOTD host, and former England top striker, Gary Lineker. As the UK's leading footie programme that's a fair bit of time for such an old crony ... but as the presenters said afterwards, what enthusiasm Bobby still has. That's really not bad for a profession he's been involved in for 49 years !!
News (2) Commentators part 2
Listening to yesterday's exciting Liverpool v Manchester United game (score : 2-3) I was able to confirm that former Leeds United manager, Jimmy Armfield (Blackpool) is still giving his excellent commentary analysis to the national station, Radio Five Live. I've not seen him this season, but Bob Wilson (Arsenal) is still the front man of I.T.V.'s football presentations.According to the Arsenal website, he is also their goalkeeping coach.

5th September, 1999
I decided to make 'Where are they now ?' a page in it's own right today.

I have a George Best story. When George played with the L.A.Aztecs, he was one of my heroes so I wanted his autograph. I have a newspaper photo clipping of George signing my copy of a "George Best Football Annual". See George Best Autograph
News (1) Best Headline
Good to see George Best's picture from the 60's in full colour on the front of a national newspaper. The headline to today's edition of 'Sport First' (No.78) runs, "Becks is Best says George!", and it concerns our George reckoning David Beckham is the best choice as the new European Footballer of the Year.
News (2) Yet Another Geordie Homecoming
Newcastle United specialise in getting Geordie born footballers to return to manage / play for them. And this time it's former England manager, Bobby Robson (Ipswich Town manager). See Newcastle United Official Website for more details.
News (3) Commentators
Good to hear Jackie Charlton's (Leeds United) excellent commentary of the Republic of Ireland European qualifier on Channel 5 (U.K.) last week. He obviously thought he was still on the bench ... Likewise, Billy McNeil (Celtic) was covering Scotland's match last night, again on Channel 5. And for anyone who doesn't know already, Norman Hunter (Leeds United) is still doing his excellently Leeds biased commentary on Radio Leeds. If you spot any other of the 70 - 71 players on your local radio or on telly, please let me know.
29th August, 1999
Lots of new information creeped it's way onto the site today thanks in part to getting my hands on "The PFA Premier and Football League Players' Records 1946-1998" Edited and compiled by Barry J. Hugman. Lennard Queen Anne Press, 1998. An excellent book which I've followed for five editions now. In the interests of staying non-commerce orientated, I'm not providing links to books as yet.
Also developed Chelsea's page, and started a Peter Osgood page.

24th August, 1999
Found an excellent tribute to Stewart Scullion (Watford) which I've included with various links on the Second Divison Star Gallery (seeWhere Are They Now ?)

23rd August, 1999 (p.m.)
The 1970-71 footballers have quite a lot of footballing and famous off-spring which is highlighted on the new page Sons and Daughters, which is added to the related subjects section on the index page. To celebrate, Chris Casper's Dad, Frank, has now got career figures added

News
Related directly to the above it's good to see Jimmy Lawson's son Ian Lawson score 3 goals in 4 games for Bury at the beginning of the new season.

News
Old news I know but it's great to see that two of the 70-71 players are raking in the money from advertising. George Graham is giving his name to the Playstation game 'Player Manager Ninety Nine', hence his picture and autograph are appearing everywhere. And George Best is advertising Littlewoods Pools on giant posters just about everywhere (in Leeds anyway...).
To celebrate this there is now a full George Best page with career figures, links and a picture.

19th August, 1999
I can't find a reasonable picture of John Osborne yet, but have now retrospectively added a tribute link below (see 10th August, 1999). I have now made a start on getting Peter Shilton's picture and career details up.

16th August, 1999
Career figures and pictures have now been added for Arthur Mann and John McGrath (see News 10th August, 1999).

Obituaries
One of the worst things about buying the new season's Rothman's Football Yearbook', is reading the obituaries and discovering which of my heroes have died in the previous 12 months ... Consequently this page is very sad to announce the deaths of Arthur Mann (d.3.2.99), John McGrath (d. 25.12.98), John Osborne (d.7.11.98) (see WBA) , and Sir Alf Ramsey (d. 28.4.99).

Well I finally saw 'OK' magazine's pictures of Victoria Adams and David Beckham's wedding (see Victoria & David in Love or The wedding gallery!!!). And who should be there but Manchester United director, Sir Bobby Charlton.

3rd August, 1999
I've tried using images from Arsenal's Official Site to show new pictures of Charlie George.

1st August, 1999
There is a new addition of a brief story of the Leeds United League Cup win in 1968 including a great picture of the cup winning team too.

25th July, 1999
A busy day. See Where Are They Now ? for Frank Casper news, which to celebrate, I've linked a picture of Frank on the Burnley page. There's also a new article added to the Leeds United page written in 1971 by Peter Lorimer ('s ghost writers). It's called 'Ton Up Plus' all about Peter scoring goals. I've added a couple of pictures of Peter for good measure including one of when he was only 15 years old. There's now also pictures of Mick Channon linked to the Southampton page to go with the last 'where are they now?'

19th July, 1999
Well, I didn't know who the Blackpool manager Les Shannon was, so when I came across a picture of him and his review of the 1969-70 season, I HAD to include it. There is now also a picture of Frank Worthington available from the Huddersfield Town page. But most fun of all (?) is a picture of the ground-breaking wave, championed by Leeds United in the early Seventies.

15th July, 1999 (pm!)
Billy Bremner's page has now got a league record, and a new fab photo from 1959. And now there's a new 1966 World Cup Winners link, which is partially up and running.

15th July, 1999
The Football League career record of an individual player has now been added for the first time, and bizarrely the subject is Rod Belfitt. Ideally, this I would be doing this for all the players, but that will take YEARS ! So if there's a player you would like to see added, e-mail me, and it'll be done !!

11th July, 1999.
There's no doubt that Don Revie was well naffed off at Leeds Utd being branded as a team that fouled. Indeed Don was at the forefront of introducing top conditions for his players. (A point mentioned in the t.v. series, 'The Manageress" for anyone who saw it). For a chance to see Don's views see, "What I Expect From My Players", written by Don in 1970, and added to the Leeds United page today.

7th July, 1999.
Welcome to the new NEWS page. Obviously I can't include every uttering of every player because some of them are still managers so for that I would recommend visiting their team's website. If however there is a newspaper article specifically about one of the 420 players, or about the era generally and I spot it, then I'll try to include it.
