'Arry Arrested

Harry Redknapp (West Ham United)  is involved with a police investigation into football corruption. Whether or not this ends any speculation that he is a candidate to be the next England manager is not yet confirmed. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7116823.stm reports:

Five men have been arrested in connection with alleged corruption in football, police have said.
Those held included Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp, the club's chief executive Peter Storrie and its former chairman Milan Mandaric.

The five men were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud and false accounting.

Mr Redknapp and three others have since been released on police bail. A 30-year-old remains in custody.

He is understood to be Charlton player and Senegalese international Amdy Faye, currently on loan to Rangers.

The City of London Police inquiry is believed to be centred around the transfer of Mr Faye to Portsmouth, a deal set up by agent Willie McKay.

Police refused to give details of those arrested and would only confirm they were aged 69, 60, 55, 48 and 30.

On his release Mr Redknapp said: "We all helped the police with their inquiries, but it doesn't directly concern me, it's other people involved.

"I've been answering questions to help the police. I am not directly concerned with their inquiries.

"They have to arrest you to talk to you, for you to be in the police station. I think that's the end of it, it didn't directly concern me."

The solicitor representing Mr Redknapp and Mr Storrie emphasised that his clients were cooperating with police.

Speaking outside the police station Paul Martin said: "The inquiries do not relate to either of those individuals, they relate to entirely different individuals.

"They are ongoing investigations in relation to those other individuals, and for that reason they are unable to comment further, and there is nothing that they can discuss."

The arrests are part of City of London Police's on-going inquiry into alleged corruption, a spokesman said.

The men were held as officers carried out raids on 12 locations across the country. Two of those searches are still ongoing.

Detectives from the economic crime unit of the City of London Police are investigating allegations of corruption within football and its impact on owners and shareholders.

In July, officers raided Newcastle United, Portsmouth and Rangers football clubs as part of the inquiry.

Radford's Revenge

Not many people realise that Hereford United's star goalscorer in the 1972 cup tie v Newcastle United, Ronnie Radford (Newport County) was an ex-Leeds United professional, signing to them in October 1961 from Sheffield Wednesday Amateurs. He did not play a first team match, however, and it wasn't till he turned out for Newport County in the 1969-70 season that he made his League debut.

His name is famously linked to Hereford due to 'Ronnie's Rocket', the goal that won him Match of the Day's Goal of the Season in the 1971-72 season. He later clocked up League matches for Hereford when they entered the League in the 1972-73 season.

It must have been very pleasing for Ronnie to see his Hereford United team beat Leeds United 1-0 in the first round replay of the FA Cup on Tuesday (20 November) at Elland Road.

How much sweeter it must have been then, when today - only 5 days later - a second of Ronnie's former clubs also beat Leeds United 1-0!

In Leeds United's first ever encounter with Cheltenham Town, played at Whaddon Road in League One, Cheltenham sneaked a victory in the final minutes in a match Leeds had dominated but failed to take their chances. Ronnie was at the club a number of seasons in the Sixties when they were still non-League, and before Ronnie moved on to Newport County.

I'm fairly certain Leeds don't play another of Ronnie's clubs now, so they should be safe ... until the home fixture against Cheltenham in the League, that is!

Dolan Out

Terry Dolan (Huddersfield Town)'s reign as manager of Unibond Premier League side Guiseley has come to a shock ending. The club were riding high in 5th place and had a 9 match unbeaten spell in the League at the beginning of the season. The club website says that Terry and the club had had 'divergent views on how the club should develop and progress'. Terry had been manager since October 2006.

Venables Out

Terry Venables (QPR) reign as Steve McClaren's assistant has come to an end following the departure of McClaren from the post as England manager. England only needed a draw at Wembley against Croatia to quailfy for Euro 2008 and they managed to lose 3-2, in spite of pulling back a two goal deficit. Suddenly a whole new generation of boys and young men will know what it is like to miss a tournament, which those of us in our forties took for granted in the Seventies...

Well I watched the BBC coverage and laughed out loud at mark Lawrenson's comment, that goalkeeping was more Frank Carson than Scott'... one for us fans of the 70s, but after the game the BBC cut frustratingly quickly to the News so I hopped on the Sky Sports News (Sky 405, Freeview...er...something else) and the panal there was filled with the 70-71 stars: Alan Mullery (Tottenham Hotspur), Sammy McIlory (Manchester United) and Gordon McQueen (St Mirren).

Last week I heard Brian Little (Aston Villa) commentating on an England Under 21 match on Radio Five Live Extra.

Also Dave Bassett (Walton and Hersham) was a pundit on Yorkshire Television's regional football show now that he is the Assistant Manager at Leeds United. My last sighting of him was back in 2003, though I'm sure he's done media work since this and before now.

Get Out of Here!

Rodney Marsh (QPR) is one of the guests on the celebrity survival come career reviving show, I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here! It is a TV reality show where people live in wilderness conditions being voted out by the public. It is in its 7th series in England all shown on UK's ITV1 channel.

The only previous footballers on the series are John Fashanu (series 2 runner-up) and  Neil Ruddock (series 3), but series 3 was notable for having George Best (Manchester United)'s Ex, Alex Best.

Among the 1970s stars to previously appear are: series 1 winner Tony Blackburn; (Not so) Little Jimmy Osmond; Johnny 'Rotten' Lydon; Sheila '1/3 of Three Degrees' Ferguson; and Tommy Cannon and Bobby Ball.

Famous football fan Eddie Large and his mate Sid Little must have been asked at some point!

Billy McEwan (Hibernian)'s spell as manager of York City is at an end. Billy has been at the club since February 2005 and last season the club reached the Conferance National Play-offs, but this season the team has struggled and they are at the bottom end of the division.

Don Steps up

Don Givens (Luton Town) who has been the Republic of Ireland Under 21 coach, took over the first team for today's match against Wales following the departure of Steve Staunton. Don did act up into this role once before in November 2002.  The Euro 2008 qualifier played at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff it finished 2-2, neither team were in a position to qualify for the finals.

The Brian Clough Trophy

The following news about 1907-71 favourite, Brian Clough (Derby County manager) is reported at http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/7095254.stm:

Brian Clough game raises £100,000

Clough, who managed both Derby and Forest, died in 2004
Derby County and Nottingham Forest have announced that the inaugural Brian Clough Trophy game in July raised £100,000 for East Midlands charities.
The match, on 31 July, attracted a crowd of 25,159 at Derby's Pride Park.

The Trophy, named after the legendary former manager of both clubs, will be contested whenever they meet - whether in a league, cup or friendly match.

The £100,000 will be divided between the two clubs' nominated charities and the Brian Clough Memorial Fund.

It has been divided up as follows:

£25,000 for Derby's nominated charities (10 designated charities for 2007/08 sharing £20,000, and £5,000 to the Derbyshire FA's charities).

£25,000 to Forest's annual nominated charity - the Danielle Beccan Memorial Trust.

£25,000 will be distributed by the Brian Clough Memorial Fund to a number of local charities, at the discretion of the Clough family.

All three parties have agreed to present £12,500 each to the East Midlands Air Ambulance and NSPCC (East Midlands).

Smith Steps Down

Jim Smith (Boston United) has stepped down as manager of Oxford United, but he remains a club director.

England v Portugal 1969

Anyone watch Sky Channel 442, ESPN Classic this week? It has been running England internationals from the 60s and 70s. The first one I watched was England v Portugal played at Wembley 10 December 1969 and was a 1-0 England victory.

The team: Peter Bonetti (Chelsea); Paul Reaney (Leeds United), Emlyn Hughes (Liverpool), Alan Mullery (Tottenham Hotspur), Jackie Charlton(Leeds United), Bobby Moore (WHU); Francis Lee (Manchester City), Colin Bell (Manchester City),  Jeff Astle (WBA),  Bobby Charlton (Manchester United), Alan Ball (Everton).
(Teams are the both the site placings and, on this occasion, the team they were playing for at the time of the match).

And for the record. Portugal's team was :
Henrique; Conceiaco, Cardoso, Carlos, Murca, Tome; Grace, Toni, Guerreiro, Antonio, Joao.

Jackie Charlton got the goal.

A few things I noted was that this was:

1) I knew that England were going win even though I didn't know the match. Why? Well a lot of people do not realise that the first time Peter Bonetti lost in an England shirt was in his 7th match - the notorious 3-2 defeat to West Germany in the World Cup Quarter Final in Mexico 1970.

Up to then he had played six won six, and indeed he had only let in one goal in those 6 matches.

This match was his last game before the World Cup match - which proved to be his last for England. At 2-0 up England looked set to win, they lost 3-2 and Bonetti standing in for Banks was often blamed, I believe very unfairly.

Alex Stepney and Gordon West also played 4 games between them in this period, but Gordon Banks was always considered the number 1.

Current England manager, Steve McLaren would do well to remember this lesson from our history. We need a solid goalkeeping number 2 for the big tournaments - well if we reach one!

2) This was Paul Reaney's second game of 3 for England, he never lost in an England shirt.

3) It was Jackie's 6th of 6 England goals in 35 games. He played in just 2 more games for England after this.

4) It was Hughes and Astle's second games for England. Astle went on to only play 5 games and never scored. Don't we know it - he missed a sitter v Brazil in the famous 1970 World Cup Finals' Group match!

5) But most notably, no less than 4 of the team have died, Hughes, Astle, Ball and Moore. That seems such a lot out of 11 men, for whom even the oldest player (Jackie) is still only 72 now.

Commentators Update

Radio Leeds' coverage of Leeds United matches is usually by Adam Pope and Eddie Gray (Leeds United)but tonight's match Bournemouth v Leeds United Eddie's place has been taken by Eddie's brother, Frank Gray (Leeds United youth). Frank is very good and sounded like he's being doing it for years though this is the first time I have heard him commentate. Frank is currently the manager of Woking in the National Conference League.

Funnily enough Frank had the briefest of brief appearences on BBC 1 last night in the programme Movie Connections about Gregory's Girl. John Gordon Sinclair who played Gregory went on to sing the 1982 Scotland World Cup song, We Have a Dream, from which they showed a clip which definitely showed Frank Gray and Asa Hartford (West Bromwich Albion).

Another gem of information that came from the programme was that Dee Hepburn, who played Dorothy, the footballing playing girl that Gregory has a crush on, played all her own stunts having spent time with Partick Thistle to learn how to play. (The programme joked about this so I won't...) She named checked Alan Rough and Partick coach who's name I didn't catch.

TV Appearances Update

I see from The Championship (ITV Sunday am) that Lawrie McNenemy (Doncaster Rovers Manager) was on the pitch at Southampton's game on Saturday having just been awarded the Freedom of the City in Southampton.

Meanwhile on Match of the Day 2 Duncan McKenzie (Nottingham Forest) had a brief appearance in their special report on Everton, I presume he must do match day duties for the club.

And this one is very obscure, but on UK Gold (plus actually!) I watched some of Victoria Wood Live at the Albert Hall recorded in 2001, and Sir Bobby Charlton (Manchester United) was given a mention in one of her songs for his famous wrap over hairstyle!

Bassett Returns

Dave 'Harry' Bassett (Walton and Hersham) has returned to football as Dennis Wise's Assistant Manager at Leeds United. Leeds United began the season on minus 15 points due to the League disliking the club's method of getting out of administration, causing great joy in the football World, in spite of being an obvious injustice (yes I am a Leeds fan). But Dennis ably supported by Gus Poyet soon wiped out the deficit and charged up to 6th place in the League by refusing to get beaten in the opening 13 matches.

But good fortune is a stranger to Leeds United and Gus was hand picked out by Tottenham Hotspur when they they appointed Juande Ramos to replace Martin Jol as their manager.

Dennis had little choice but to wave his mate goodbye and has brought in his old Wimbledon manager, Dave Bassett as his assistant.

Dave and Dennis were joint caretaker managers at Southampton in 2005, when Harry Redknapp (West Ham United) left the club. Dave was there just three games, a win, a lose and a draw, and has not been around in football since.

Hall of Fame 2007

Terry Venables (QPR) has been inducted into the National Football Museum's Hall of Fame in his role as a manager. Ten new people are inducted every year. This year also sees 70-71 players Graeme Souness (Tottenham Hotspur) and Nobby Stiles (Manchester United) enetered in the players category.

New Celtic Book

One of the best teams for autobiographies of their legends has got to be Celtic. According to Amazon tomorrow sees the release of yet another autobiography Celtic's Lost Legend: The George Connelly Story. Written by George Connelly (Celtic) with Bryan Cooney. Black and White Publishing.

George Connelly was hailed as the greatest Scottish talent of his generation. He made 254 appearances for Celtic and played in the Scotland team that qualified for the 1974 World Cup Finals but, at the age of just twenty-six he walked away from football and a glittering career. Connelly has never revealed the truth about what happened. Until now.In "Celtic s Lost Legend" he tells the incredible inside story of his life and career for the first time.

From his early appearances for Celtic in 1968, he soon showed that he possessed a very rare talent. He moved round the pitch with the authority of Franz Beckenbauer, could pass long or short with unerring accuracy, could entertain crowds with his keepie-uppie skills and seemed to have the world at his feet. Celtic were rebuilding after the Lisbon Lions and Connelly was the cornerstone of the new plan.

But, as Celtic and Scotland looked forward to a successful new era, the demons in George Connelly's head were starting to persecute him. And behind the laid-back exterior, the man himself was starting to fall apart. In "Celtic s Lost Legend", George Connelly tells the full story of why he walked away from his dreams and from the team he loves.

More George Best Books

No less than three George Best (Manchester United) books have been released on to the market this past month...

1) Our George: A Family Memoir of George Best (Macmillan) has been brought out by his sister Barbara Best.

http://www.amazon.co.uk says:

It's a story everyone thinks they know... about the young boy from the back streets of Belfast who grew up to be the most famous footballer in the world, a legend who was the first superstar of the sport but whose troubled personal life, as much as his sporting genius, came to dominate the headlines. But Barbara and Carol, George's sisters, and Dickie, his father, know more. "Our George" reveals for the first time the real story of George Best - as told by those who knew him best and loved him most. It's the inside story of the ordinary Belfast family whose love for, and contact with, their famous son and brother never wavered down through the years.

It's the story of a family desperately helping him as he battled the illness that also claimed the life of his beloved wife and mother."Our George" is a searingly honest book about the influences that moulded the legend - and the demons that haunted his life. Speaking for the first time, the intensely private Best family reveals how George really felt about the people and the events that shaped his life. Barbara Best is frank in confronting George's own failings and those of some of the people who were close to him, as well as offering

2) The Complete George Best: Every Match, Every Goal (Empire Publications) by Darren Phillips looks particularly interesting for stat fans like me as it promises information on every goal and every game from his debut. See http://www.amazon.co.uk.

And finally (?!)...

3) George Best: A Celebration (John Blake Publishing Ltd)by  Bernie Smith and Maureen Hunt, two Best fans show us their memorabilia. http://www.amazon.co.uk reports:

Maureen Hunt and Bernie Smith are two avid collectors of George Best memorabilia and there is not much about the great man that they don't know or possess. They have come to realise that every collectable, keepsake and souvenir has a humourous, heart-warming or poignant story surrounding it, and piecing these gems of history together they have compiled a fitting tribute to a genuine icon. Packed with anecdotes and rare photographs, this delightful book will be a welcome addition to any Best fan's collection and is wonderful way to commemorate the man who was both hero and friend to so many people.

TV Appearances

1) FA Cup Draw

Good to see three 70-71 stars on Saturday night telly. Trevor Brooking (West Ham United) and John Hollins (Chelsea) were involved in BBC1's televised FA Cup first round draw. As a Leeds United fan this was the first time my club have been involved in this early stage of the cup since the 1924-25 season! It was nice to have the humble moment shared in the company of these great stars. Trevor was the master of ceremonies, and John was one of the people picking out the balls.

Incidentally, my local side when growing up, were also in the draw. Well done to Maidenhead United for their rare first round appearance, I hope you go far and maybe help me find out who I would back in a Leeds v Maidenhead encounter! For anyone who doesn't know, Maidenhead were FA Cup quarter-finalists three years in a row in the 1870s!

2) Sir Bobby Meets Parky

Then later in the evening it was the turn of Sir Bobby Charlton (Manchester United) to star as one of the guest on Parkinson (who used to and may still live near Maidenhead, by the way!) It was a very emotional interview not least for his open talking about the Munich air disaster. Sir Bobby has written a book, My Manchester United Years. See http://www.amazon.co.uk for a link through to Sir Bobby's book. Also see Books.

Totally Youf Football

Trevor Brooking (West Ham United) is on the front cover of Total Youth Football, a magazine which does what it says on the tin.

Trevor is interviewed in his role as the FA's Director of Football Development and he has a lot of sensible things to say. He addresses the issue that World Cup winners Italy have 70 % Italian players in Serie A, whereas the English Premier League has just 37 % - but the only solution offered is to make our lads more able to compete in the World market. A little laissez faire for my liking.

The magazine was given a welcome proninant promotion in my local Asda, which was good to see - being an U14s team manager myself, the training plans were actually quite useful. See www.totalyouthfootball.com for more information.

Burrows Steps Up

Frank Burrows (Swindon Town) has become the new Assistant Manager of Leicester City, following the departure of Gary Megson. Gary, son of 70-71 star Don Megson (Bristol Rovers), only joined Leicester City on 13 September 2007, and has left following speculation that he will become the new Bolton Wanderers manager. It was Gary who brought Frank to Leicester City in the first place. Frank's last role known to this site was when he was Gary's  assistant at Nottingham Forest.

Commentators Update

Radio 5 Live's coverage of the Northern Ireland Euro 2008 qualification match match v Sweden featured Bryan Hamilton (Linfield).

Sky One's coverage of the England Under 21 match Republic of Ireland v England featured Peter Taylor (Southend). And whilst I'm on that match, the Ireland coach was Don Givens (Luton Town) who has been in this role since 2000. The match, an U21 Euro qualifier, was a poor 3-0 defeat for his side at home in Cork.

Anyone interested in this sort of thing will love a new site a stumbled across recently which has a whole thread devoted to who commentated what match. See http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=631575&page=1

The digital spy people started this theme last season also. I particularly enjoyed one person's post to this forum which despairingly asked, ' what's the point of all this???!'  How the blind cannot see... no hold on, he's right, what is the point???????

... Hmm, I hadn't thought of it that way before, still... Thanks to this forum the following commentators have been newly spotted:

Dixie McNeil (Northampton Town)  at BBC Radio Wales
Colin Addison (Sheffield United) at BBC Radio Wales
Eoin Hand (Portsmouth) at RTE Radio One
Roger Davies (Bridgnorth Town) at Ram Radio
Alan Gowling (Manchester United) at Radio Manchester
Brian Horton (Port Vale) at Radio Manchester

Century Radio - Legends

Mick Horswill (Sunderland) has joined Malcolm Macdonald (Luton Town) and Bernie Slavin as a part of the legends programme at Century FM.

Whilst looking up Roger Davies I see that the Midland's  Century 106 had a legends programme that included him along with Larry Lloyd (Liverpool)Kenny Burns (Birmingham City), Alan Birchenall (Crystal Palace) and Gary Birtles. After the Radio station became Heart 106 in 2005, the phone-in became legendary itself, but it was sadly axed in July 2006.

Incidentally you can book these legends at http://www.legendsreunited.co.uk/

Roger Davies is included on the site for the first time. I cannot confirm the Bridgnorth Town placing, but he joined Worcester City in August 1971, and it was the club he played for prior to them so it is an educated guess. He can be found on the Non League page... or at least he will be when it becomes active on the site's new location!

Wrath of Yorath

I see Terry Yorath (Leeds United ) has jumped on the bandwagon of slating his old charges, though to be fair he is offering defence to the manager John Toshack (Cardiff City). http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/internationals/7054468.stm reports:

Former Wales manager Terry Yorath has accused the current players of lacking passion when playing for their country.
Yorath, who guided Wales to the brink of World Cup 1994 qualification, said the recent performances
against San Marino and Cyprus were "appalling".

But he spared manager John Toshack from criticism, and said he should continue in the job for the next eight years.

"I didn't see any passion at all in either game. I just sense there is a bit of pride missing," said Yorath.

"I saw people who didn't really know what they were doing or how they could get a bit of passion into their play.

"Sometimes the players have got to look at themselves. They are very well paid. We have got a small squad - we've always had a small squad.

"Now we've got a squad without Giggs, Hartson, Savage - people who were really the lifeblood of the team.

"They always wanted to play for Wales. At the moment I look at the squad and think 'are they little boys who can take it or leave it and get paid too much money?'.

"If they don't want to play for Wales, tell the manager that and get out."

In the wake of Saturday's Euro 2008 qualifying defeat to Cyprus, Toshack accused some of his players of taking playing for Wales for granted and not appreciating their "luxury lifestyles".

Yorath agreed with Toshack's frank assessment and claimed many of Wales' players are in a "comfort zone".

He also said they are guilty of believing they are better players than they actually are.

It's no good criticising John - you have to look at the players

"They aren't at any kind of level," Yorath, one of the most competitive players to ever wear a Wales shirt, told BBC Wales Sport.

"We've got to be beating teams like San Marino by more than two goals to one.

"But it's become easy for these players to get their wages without putting everything into it."

The victory over San Marino was Toshack's 10th in his 27 games in charge.

Many fans have called for him to go, and even Football Association of Wales councillor Phil Woosnam called for a managerial change last week.

The FAW secretary general David Collins has backed Toshack, though, asking fans to be patient as he rebuilds the side with youngsters.

Yorath is adamant Toshack is the best man for the job and has urged the FAW to show their faith in him by entrusting him with the job for years to come.

"It's no good criticising John - you have to look at the players and how many we've got available," said Yorath. "At the moment there aren't many.

"They should give John Toshack a longer contract and say 'we trust you - the performances haven't been good, the players have let themselves down as well as their country, now you sort it out over the next seven or eight years'.

"There's nobody better qualified than John to do that job."

Non-League Paper

Issue 395, Sunday 21 October 2007, of this site's favourite weekly paper, The NonLeague Paper was a www.Bob7071.co.uk special, featuring as it did 1970-71 stars Pelé  (Star players of Mexico 1970 / Santos) and Peter Taylor (Southend). on the front cover.

The paper tells us to buy next week's edition to find out how to win tickets to meet Pelé as a part of Sheffield FC's 150th birthday. The club - not to be confused with the two Championship sides from the same city, is often cited as being the oldest football club in the World.

Peter Taylor was the subject of the paper's headline due to being linked to the available job at Stevenage Borough a side pushing for promotion in the Blue Square Premier (that's the Conference League to most of us).

Meanwhile the paper reports that Big Ron Atkinson (Oxford United) has returned once again to football, this time as consultant to Halesowen  a Southern Premiership side - that is three levels below League football. He has gone to help out his mate, Morrell Maison, the club manager, who he previously helped out at Kettering .

For fans of the remarkable Sky One tv show Big Ron Manager, the paper also tells us that the hapless Steve Bleasdale has become manager of Welsh Premier side, Bangor. Steve you are barmy, and I cheered when I read this news. I wish you every success in the post.

Frank Gray (Leeds United youth) is currently the manager of Woking, a post he took up in 3 May 2007. They are in the Blue Square Premier League. His last post was in October 2006 when he was briefly the manager of Grays Athletic.

SOCCER giant Bob Moncur today vowed to win his toughest battle ever.

The last United captain to lift a major trophy has gone under the knife after he was diagnosed with cancer of the colon.

But back home in Gateshead, recovering from the operation, Bob today vowed to fight on.

The defiant former Scotland skipper, said: “As far as my life is concerned it’s business as usual starting with the home game against Everton on Sunday.”

The hugely respected Chronicle columnist and Century Radio pundit was diagnosed with the tumour early last month.

This week he had an operation to remove a tumour in his colon at the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Gateshead.

Perth-born Bob must now wait to find out the results of further tests to see what treatment is required.

But he aid: “Life goes on for me and I will continue to work as normal. My sincere thanks to Mark Katory and his team for the magnificent attention during my stay at the Queen Elizabeth last week, and of course to my family for their invaluable support during this difficult time.

“Now I will await for the test results to see where I go from there, but I know that I am not out of the woods yet.

“People should not be surprised to see me at work as usual, albeit I may be walking a little slower than normal.”

Bob guided Newcastle to victory in the 1969 Fairs Cup Final against Hungarian outfit Ujpest Dosza and was described by then manager Joe Harvey as “the supreme sweeper and most valuable asset to Newcastle and Scotland.”

In that tie Bob netted three goals over two legs to deliver silverware to Tyneside and made a total of 358 appearances for United.

His last was in the 1974 FA Cup Final against Liverpool before he signed for Sunderland and skippered them to promotion in 1976.

The 62-year-old has worked in both TV and radio over four decades.

Bob went on to manage Carlisle, Hearts, Plymouth Argyle and Hartlepool before retiring from the football world to pursue his great love of sailing.

The Management Merry-Go-Round...
It's been a busy time since the start of the season for Bob 70-71 Pages' Players and their offspring who ply their trade as club manager...

Mick Docherty (Burnley) had been last heard of by this site when he left Burnley for the third time in his career in June 2004. It seems that in January 2006 he became Ronnie Jepson's Assistant Manager a post he was still in at the start of this season.

After a poor start in League One this season, Ronnie resigned and Mick was raised to the position of joint caretaker manager along with first-team coach Iffy Onuora on 10 September 2007.

Mick said he was hopeful of getting the full-time post, but results did not go the club's way.

On 8 October, 2007 Gillingham lost 5-0 away to Swindon Town and Mick left the club two days later. He was jointly in charge for 5 matches, which included 2 wins, 2 loses and a draw.

On 2 October 2007, John Ward (Lincoln City) resigned his long standing post as manager of Cheltenham Town and joined Carlisle United. John joined Cheltenham Town back in November 2003 and at the time of leaving was the 9th longest serving manager of a League side. He helped the club wim promotion last season.

He left for Carlisle United as he believes this will increase his chances of managing a Championship side. Certainly the side he is leaving were one off the bottom of League One when he left, whilst the side he is joining are in the play-off zone of the same division. In the process he has won a four year contract for himself.

Peter Taylor (Southend) left Championship side Crystal Palace on 8 October, 2007 due to the club's poor start to the season. After 10 games they have picked up just 10 points and are currently placed 19th in the league. Peter had been the manager for 16 months.

Peter has previously managed Hull City, Southend United, Dover Athletic, Gillingham, Leicester City and Brighton and Hove Albion. He also managed England in a caretaker role for one match, a 1-0 defeat against Italy in 2000, when David Beckham was captain for the first time. (See http://news.bbc.co.uk)

His departure has made way for the grand return of Neil Warnock (Rotherham United) who left Sheffield United after their unfortunate relegation from the Premiership last season. He was appointed on 11 October, 2007.

On 8 October, 2007, Willie Donachie (Manchester City) left his manager's post at Millwall along with assistant manager Pat Holland (West Ham United). Willie took over the full manager's role just under a year ago when they were bottom of League One. He helped them up to the season's final position of 10th, but leaves with them back on the bottom in the new season.
