Why did I end up supporting Leeds when my nearest League team was Reading ?... Well there's your answer really.
Reading wasn't even that local, my town's team , Maidenhead United (see Maidenhead United F.C. - Official Website) were non-league and I did go to the games, but Leeds United were at their Don Revie best. There was a bunch of my friends who cheered on their every move from afar, and then I found out my Mum's family even came from Leeds, so I WAS a local. Nowadays I really am and I've lived all my adult life in Leeds.

This team won just about everything and were runners-up a whole lot more - victims of their own success, because in the days before massive squads, the players were all knackered by the time they reached the final games of the season. When the team broke up success went with them, Billy Bremner, Allan Clarke, and Eddie Gray (twice !) all became Leeds managers but couldn't restore the glory.

Only England World Cup '66 winner, and Bobby's brother, Jackie Charlton went on to a bigger post-Leeds career, as a famous fisherman ... oh and Republic of Ireland manger. ( I know, Johnny Giles was their manager too, but he never got a side to beat England ...)
Other Bob 70-71 stars to manage Leeds include, Brian Clough (Derby County manager), Jimmy Armfield, Jock Stein (Celtic manager), Jimmy Adamson (Burnley manager), Howard Wilkinson, George Graham and Terry Venables (QPR).
